{"id":801,"date":"2004-12-05T08:15:40","date_gmt":"2004-12-05T08:15:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zmetro.com\/?p=801"},"modified":"2004-12-05T08:15:40","modified_gmt":"2004-12-05T08:15:40","slug":"schools_quality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zmetro.com\/?p=801","title":{"rendered":"Schools, Quality of Life, Jobs, Economic Growth and Globalization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday&#8217;s property tax bill (including not small increases in local and school taxes) along with recent articles on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/magazine\/content\/04_49\/b3911401.htm?c=bwinsidernov25&#038;n=link1&#038;t=email\">China Price<\/a> and Milwaukee&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/news\/metro\/dec04\/281193.asp\">loss of unskilled labor jobs<\/a> serve to remind Wisconsin residents of the real issues facing our state:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Encouraging the formation of more new businesses.  I don&#8217;t believe the formation of yet another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/bym\/news\/nov04\/279641.asp\">quasi-government organization<\/a> is the answer.  Rather, let&#8217;s simplify (and reduce) the paperwork that any organization must support to operate in Wisconsin.\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.madisonblogs.com\/cgi-bin\/mt\/mt-search.cgi?IncludeBlogs=1&#038;search=broadband\">Broadband<\/a>:  Wisconsin is stuck with SBC, a telco that has done nothing to offer true, 2 way broadband (100X the speed of today&#8217;s rather slow DSL\/cable services) to Wisconsin residents. I have not seen any indication that our state&#8217;s political leadership has boarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=cluetrain&#038;sourceid=mozilla-search&#038;start=0&#038;start=0&#038;ie=utf-8&#038;oe=utf-8&#038;client=firefox-a&#038;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official\">cluetrain<\/a> on this one.\n<li>Biotech certainly has great promise for Wisconsin, however, historically the benefits have generally gone to out of state firms.   Perhaps this will change somewhat over time.<\/ul>\n<p>Without a strong, growing tax base, we&#8217;ll continue to see substantial increases in local property taxes.
