To both cryptographers and privacy advocates, this might seem the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2020\/apr\/11\/for-non-intrusive-tracking-of-covid-19-smartphones-have-to-be-smarter\" data-reader-unique-id=\"8\" style=\"text-decoration: none; color: rgb(65, 110, 210); max-width: 100%\">obvious<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>way to protect public health and privacy at the same time. Singapore has already<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tracetogether.gov.sg\/\" data-reader-unique-id=\"12\" style=\"text-decoration: none; color: rgb(65, 110, 210); max-width: 100%\">deployed<\/a>and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/opentrace-community\" data-reader-unique-id=\"13\" style=\"text-decoration: none; color: rgb(65, 110, 210); max-width: 100%\">open-sourced<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>one that uses contact tracing based on bluetooth beacons. Most of the academic and tech industry proposals follow this strategy, as the \u201cobvious\u201d way to tell who\u2019s been within a few metres of you and for how long. Covid-19 is a notifiable disease so a doctor who diagnoses you must inform the public health authorities, and if they have the bandwidth they call you and ask who you\u2019ve been in contact with. They then call your contacts in turn.
