While it’s normal for airports to provide economic incentives for new service, that is a massive amount of money. This description of how TSMC’s Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV) lithography machines work give some sense of one such miracle:

Fiat money becomes obsolete. Energy is the true currency. Governments can print money, but they can’t print energy. Capital will flow to those who best allocate energy to produce more goods and services.

Analysis by public and academic AI detection software shows that Michelin’s new Dallas reviews are not the work of its human inspectors.

This makes the frivolity of the book’s framing somewhat disconcerting. The “unreliable boyfriend” of the title is, of course, the United States of America. Canada is “the girl next door.” On page xvi of the prologue, she deploys an extended metaphor, in which post-war America was either a polygamous husband or a polyamorous boyfriend, its allies are its wives and girlfriends, and sexual intercourse is conducted in the missionary position, with Uncle Sam at the top. Then again, maybe this sort of thing goes down well in our post-literate age (each of the book’s three sections is prefaced with a paragraph-long précis of its contents.)

Recently, I had the privilege of visiting one of the largest cherry and apple packing facilities in Yakima, Washington. As you drive in, it feels like you are entering a massive storage facility. Hundreds of controlled-atmosphere rooms store fruit like apples. Small wonder it has been trounced by SpaceX, which last year launched Falcon 9 rockets 165 times, charging private clients $70m a pop, while Ariane charges more than $90m despite those subsidies. To fix this, the ESA is tentatively copying America’s space agency, NASA, which decades ago encouraged the growth of commercial space firms by switching from “cost-plus” contracts for developing rockets to buying fixed-price launch services, a policy that let Mr Musk’s SpaceX flourish.

It’s a hell of a thing when the S5 loses a beauty contest to the Toyota Crown.

We arrive long before the museum doors open. On a tarmac terrace, half a dozen museum guards are lined up for a morning parade. Somehow the gates swing open, we park our car, and, promising to return later, we start off on a route I’ve laid out to see several landmarks. The museum stands in a peaceful oasis of trees and pleasantly arranged buildings on the north-eastrn corner of the Central Business District.
