{"id":13099,"date":"2024-01-24T09:57:43","date_gmt":"2024-01-24T15:57:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zmetro.com\/?p=13099"},"modified":"2024-01-24T10:52:31","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T16:52:31","slug":"complexity-quality-and-out-of-the-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zmetro.com\/?p=13099","title":{"rendered":"Complexity, Quality and \u201cout of the crisis\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I recently <strong><em>recommended<\/em><\/strong> Deming\u2019s book: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/direct.mit.edu\/books\/book\/4192\/Out-of-the-Crisis\">out of the crisis<\/a>\u201d to a friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/business\/boeing-aerospace\/boeing-not-spirit-mis-installed-piece-that-blew-off-alaska-max-9-jet\/\">The Boeing mess<\/a> offers a front row seat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Boeing inspector recorded in CMES that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/business\/boeing-aerospace\/boeing-not-spirit-mis-installed-piece-that-blew-off-alaska-max-9-jet\/\">repair was not done properly<\/a>, that the Spirit team \u201cjust painted over the defects.\u201d As a result, the repair job was reopened. Looking at it anew, the Spirit mechanics then discovered that, in addition to the problematic rivets, the pressure seal sandwiched between the plug and the airframe was damaged and needed replaced. \u201cThe big deal with this seal,\u201d the whistleblower wrote, was that the replacement part was not on hand in Renton and needed to be ordered, which could threaten to delay the jet\u2019s delivery schedule.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Well worth reading!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bonus: Deceased <a href=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/?q=%22joe+sutter%22+book+boeing&amp;t=brave&amp;ia=web\">Boeing Engineer Joe Sutter\u2019s book<\/a> is worth a deep dive as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aviationweek.com\/aerospace\/manufacturing-supply-chain\/opinion-can-boeings-misguided-leaders-be-stopped\">And<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>For years, <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationweek.com\/term\/boeing\">Boeing<\/a> management was accused of focusing on money rather than products, performance or people. Between 2014 and 2018, it gave away $53 billion in dividends and buybacks.
