{"id":8210,"date":"2020-08-20T12:47:32","date_gmt":"2020-08-20T18:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zmetro.com\/?p=8210"},"modified":"2020-08-21T09:03:22","modified_gmt":"2020-08-21T15:03:22","slug":"the-joy-of-cloud-computing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.zmetro.com\/?p=8210","title":{"rendered":"The &#8220;Joy&#8221; of Cloud Computing: Adobe and Canon Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/canon-says-its-cloud-service-cant-restore-users-lost-videos-or-full-size-images\">Mark Wilson<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Canon has explained what went wrong when its cloud service, image.canon, went down last week \u2013 and it&#8217;s not good news for the affected users.<\/p>\n<p>The image.canon site went offline on July 30 and only returned on August 4, following an investigation from the camera giant into what went wrong.<\/p>\n<p>On the plus side, Canon has confirmed that &#8220;we found no unauthorized access to image.canon\u201d and that &#8220;the incident caused no leakage of images&#8221;, which means it&#8217;s an entirely separate incident to the major ransomware attack that also hit the company last week.<\/p>\n<p>But unfortunately for the image.canon users affected by the earlier incident, Canon also said &#8220;there is no technical measure to restore lost video images&#8221; and that &#8220;still images can be restored, but not with original resolutions&#8221;. In a statement on the image.canon homepage, it added &#8220;we offer our deepest apologies to affected users&#8221;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2020\/08\/20\/adobe-lightroom-ios-update-photos-deleted\/\">Macrumors<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As noted by PetaPixel, complaints surfaced on the Photoshop forums on Monday, shortly after the update was released, followed by similar reports on Reddit and Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Affected users lost photos, presets, edits, watermarks, and more. One user on Reddit said that he lost two years of edits, and there are dozens of similar complaints from people who lost important data. The problem affected users who were using local storage without having uploaded that content to Adobe&#8217;s cloud storage service.<\/p>\n<p>Many of those affected were using Adobe&#8217;s free service, which has limited cloud storage, but some paid users were also impacted and lost thousands of photos.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/8\/20\/21377411\/adobe-lightroom-ios-ipados-app-update-pictures-photos-presets-deleted\">Monica Chin<\/a>:<Blockquote>For the past two days, photographers have been posting in a panic across Twitter, Reddit, and the Photoshop feedback forums. They\u2019d downloaded Adobe\u2019s latest update for Lightroom\u2019s iOS app, and suddenly their photos and presets were gone. Adobe has now confirmed the issue, and it\u2019s also said that the data is gone for good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve talked with customer service for 4+ hours over the past 2 days and just a minute ago they told me that the issue has no fix and that these lost photos are unrecoverable,\u201d complained one Reddit user, who says they\u2019ve lost over two years\u2019 worth of photo edits. The complaints were spotted by PetaPixel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is literally the worst,\u201d tweeted another customer, who said they\u2019d lost not only 800 pictures but hundreds of dollars worth of paid presets.<br \/>\n&#8220;\u201cThese lost photos are unrecoverable.\u201d&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adobe representative Rikk Flohr acknowledged and apologized for the snafu in a forum post yesterday. Per Flohr, the company has released another update \u201cto prevent this issue from impacting additional customers.\u201d However, the photos can\u2019t be recovered, according to Flohr. The update won\u2019t help anyone who\u2019s already been impacted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sincerely apologize to any customers who have been affected by this issue,\u201d Flohr wrote. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A few personal notes:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>18,000 + images in my case (backed up on local drives, thankfully)\n<li>Lightroom on iPad has been generally impressive, other than a curious inability to copy \/ paste white balance adjustments between raw images consistently.\n<li>I am a paid Lightroom subscription user and am surprised that a company with Adobe&#8217;s size and experience has created this disaster.\n<li> Canon, similar to other industries, faces competition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmetro.com\/?p=7681\">from firms where software is their game<\/a>.
