But features that suited corporate chief information officers weren\u2019t what appealed to the general public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem wasn\u2019t that we stopped listening to customers,\u201d said one former RIM insider. \u201cWe believed we knew better what customers needed long term than they did. Consumers would say, \u2018I want a faster browser.\u2019 We might say, \u2018You might think you want a faster browser, but you don\u2019t want to pay overage on your bill.\u2019 \u2018Well, I want a super big very responsive touchscreen.\u2019 \u2018Well, you might think you want that, but you don\u2019t want your phone to die at 2 p.m.\u2019 \u201cWe would say, \u2018We know better, and they\u2019ll eventually figure it out.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trying to satisfy its two sets of customers \u2013 consumers and corporate users \u2013 could leave the company satisfying neither. When RIM executives showed off plans to add camera, game and music applications to its products to several hundred Fortune 500 chief information officers at a company event in Orlando in 2010, they weren\u2019t prepared for the backlash that followed.
