{"id":14456,"date":"2024-09-01T01:05:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-01T07:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zmetro.com\/?p=14456"},"modified":"2024-09-01T05:26:06","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T11:26:06","slug":"9-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.zmetro.com\/?p=14456","title":{"rendered":"9.1"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In this latest interview in the Open Questions series,<a class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb e1llv60l0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3123089\/china-us-relations-lets-fix-our-own-national-messes-competing?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\">Charles \u201cChas\u201d Freeman assesses<\/a> the history of China-US relations and where they might go from here amid their \u201cadversarial antagonism\u201d stage and as the US presidential election looms. Freeman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3275817\/chas-freeman-mao-next-kissinger-and-why-now-not-cold-war\">interpreted<\/a> for then-president Richard Nixon during his historic 1972 Beijing trip to meet Mao Zedong. He has served in the US Foreign Service and state and defence departments and was US ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the 1991 Gulf war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raphkoster.com\/2009\/01\/08\/database-sharding-came-from-uo\/\">database partitioning<\/a> \u2014 of worlds. Parallel worlds each running the same static template database source, but evolving different runtime databases. This division of labor between coders and programmers is often overlaid with social distinctions of education and gender.<sup><a class=\"reference-link xref xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/cacm.acm.org\/opinion\/the-myth-of-the-coder\/#B7\">7<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Researching the early uses of the words \u201cprogramming\u201d and \u201ccoding,\u201d<sup><a class=\"reference-link xref xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/cacm.acm.org\/opinion\/the-myth-of-the-coder\/#B5\">5<\/a><\/sup>however, we were confronted with the near absence of evidence for this coder\/programmer distinction&nbsp;<em>in practice<\/em>. While the activities of coding and programming can be more or less clearly distinguished, the activities did not map onto different jobs, but rather were performed by the same person(s). It thus seemed that the distinction between the coder and the programmer pertains not to the reality but to the mythology of early computing. And it didn\u2019t even take an AI chatbot to come up with this list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/benioff\/status\/1830059796478988639?s=12\">laws must be fully enforced<\/a>.
